Whitewater Voyages’ Guide School 2025: Your Path to Becoming a River Guide

This year’s six-day course is structured over two consecutive three-day weekends, giving participants a comprehensive yet flexible training opportunity.
Course Details
Dates:
- Weekend 1: Friday, April 25 - Sunday, April 27
- Weekend 2: Friday, May 2 - Sunday, May 4
Location:
- Meeting Point: Kern Outdoor Center (KOC), Frandy Campground, Upper Kern River, Kernville, CA
- Time: 9:00 AM for the first day (please arrive 15 minutes early). Subsequent meeting times will be decided during class
This intensive training program is designed to equip participants with the fundamental skills required to navigate Class III and IV rapids confidently. Whether you aspire to guide professionally or enhance your private boating skills, this course lays a solid foundation in river navigation, paddle captaining, Swiftwater rescue, and river hydrology.
What to Expect
Our expert instructors are seasoned river guides with years of experience navigating the Kern River and many others across the nation. The course is structured to be thorough but also fun, fostering a non-competitive learning environment where camaraderie thrives. Over the six days, participants will engage in hands-on training, lectures, and on-water practice sessions covering:
- Reading Whitewater: Understanding river currents, eddies, and hydraulics
- Paddle Captaining: Learning to command a raft and coordinate a paddling team
- Swiftwater Rescue Techniques: Essential safety procedures for river rescues
- Navigation and Boat Control: Maneuvering through rapids with precision and skill
- Teamwork and Leadership: Building communication skills vital for guiding
By the end of the course, you’ll not only have acquired essential rafting skills but also formed lifelong friendships with fellow adventurers!

Whitewater Voyages provides all necessary rafting equipment and safety gear, including:
- Rafts and paddles
- Wetsuits and paddling jackets
- Helmets and life jackets
- Transportation to and from the river each day
- Hearty lunches on all training days
Participants should arrange their own lodging, breakfast, and dinner.
Cost and Registration
The cost for this year’s guide school is $900 per person, with a $250 non-refundable deposit required upon registration. The remaining balance is due 30 days before the first day of the course. A 6% Land/Use Fee will be applied at checkout for a total of $954.
