Essential Whitewater Rafting Gear
Rafting with Whitewater Voyages in Southern California is an incredible adventure through beautiful landscapes and thrilling rapids. But to truly enjoy it, you need the right gear. Knowing
what to wear for whitewater raftingis key to staying safe and comfortable on the water.
Here's a quick guide to what to wear to whitewater rafting to ensure a fun and safe trip!

1. Personal Flotation Device (PFD)
A Personal Flotation Device (PFD) is a must-have when rafting. It keeps you safe and buoyant if you take an unexpected dip. Our Whitewater Voyages guides will fit you with the best PFD, ensuring it's snug and adjustable for freedom of movement. The team will help find the best PFD for you and ensure that it’s:
- Well-Fitted: The PFD should be snug but not restrictive. You should be able to move your arms freely while it remains securely in place.
- Adjustable:
You’ll have adjustable straps to ensure a customized fit for any body type.
2. Helmet
A helmet is essential for protecting your head from rocks, debris, and the impact of the water. Here’s what we consider:
- Durable Material: Our helmets are made from impact-resistant materials.
- Comfort and Fit: We ensure the helmet fits snugly and comfortably. It should not shift during rapid movements.
- Adjustability: Our helmets have adjustable straps and padding for a secure fit.
3. Paddle
Your paddle is your primary tool for navigating through rapids. You will receive a good paddle that is:
- Lightweight: Designed to reduce fatigue.
- Durable: Made from materials that can withstand the impact of rocks and rough water.
- Proper Length: The length of the paddle should match your height and the type of rafting you’ll be doing.
4. Wetsuit
A wetsuit provides thermal insulation, which is particularly important in colder waters. It helps maintain your body temperature and provides an additional layer of protection.
- Thickness: Wetsuits come in various thicknesses. For Southern California’s waters, a 3/2mm wetsuit is usually sufficient.
- Fit: The wetsuit should fit snugly but not restrict your movement. A well-fitted wetsuit prevents water from entering and helps retain body heat. At Whitewater Voyages, for early season and Class V rafting trips, wetsuits and paddling jackets (a type of windbreaker made specifically for whitewater rafting) are available for a small fee at our Kern Outdoor Center.
5. Water Shoes
We encourage travelers to bring either tennis shoes that lace tightly, wetsuit booties, or rugged, protective aquatic sandals such as Tevas or Chacos that securely strap on. Avoid flip-flops—they're a no-go!
However, if you’re looking to invest in water shoes, find shoes that:
- Good Traction: Have a non-slip sole to prevent slipping on wet surfaces.
- Quick-Drying: Made from materials that dry quickly and resist waterlogging.
- Comfort: Comfortable for walking with a secure fit to avoid them coming off during the trip.

6. Best Clothing for Whitewater Rafting
When gearing up for your whitewater rafting adventure with Whitewater Voyages, comfort and safety are key. Opt for quick-drying clothes like synthetic shirts and shorts. Avoid cotton since it retains water and can make you cold.
If the weather's chilly, layering is important, especially in colder weather. Consider wearing a wetsuit or a waterproof jacket for added warmth and protection. These clothing tips will ensure you stay comfortable and enjoy your white water rafting adventure to the fullest.
